A history of Prada
Prada is one of the most lusted after Italian fashion labels and specialises in luxury goods for both men and women. The company was founded in 1913 by Mario Prada as a leather goods shop. Today’s Creative Director of Prada, Miuccia Prada, Mario’s granddaughter, inherited the company in 1978 and since then she has stamped her own creativity on the company completely.
The 1980s saw huge expansion of the company through Europe and America. A shoe line was released in 1984, followed by the classic Prada handbag in 1985 which was an overnight sensation. In 1989, Prada launched its first ready-to-wear women’s collection and the company’s popularity soared dramatically as their clean lines, opulent fabrics and subtle colour schemes captured the taste of the fashion world.
Prada’s originality has made it one of the most influential fashion houses with a subtle logo and branding making Prada a premium status symbol in the 1990s. In 1992, Prada launched Miu Miu to cater to a neglected youth market. The company has continued to grow from here and maintains its status as a premium luxury brand despite increasing competition.
