A history of Giorgio Armani
Giorgio Armani was born in 1934, and as a young man he dabbled in photography before working in the style offices of Italian department store La Rinascente where he worked importing products from India, Japan and the USA. In 1964, without any formal training, Armani designed a line of men’s wear for Nino Cerruti. Armani then became a freelance designer and consultant working for labels including Ungaro and Zegna.
It was not until 1975 that Armani stated his own company and founded the now hugely famous Armani label. He quickly became known for his re-interpretations of the traditional business suit with unstructured tailoring for men and masculine styles for women. Armani was one of the first to capture the potential in androgynous fashion. Armani’s powerful fashion encapsulated the era of economic boom in the 1980s and his influence grew exponentially.
Giorgio Armani has overseen the launch of many diffusion lines including the hugely successful glasses ranges. Following the cachet of the exclusive Armani label, Giorgio introduced cheaper diffusion lines including Emporio Armani and Armani Jeans in the 1980s. The company continues to grow and flourish and Armani dresses some of today’s most glamorous men and women.
