What information you need from your optician
The main information you need from your optician is your current prescription which must be less than two years old. If you are over the age of 70, your prescription must be updated yearly. These guidelines are set by the Association of Optometrists, the Federation of Ophthalmic and Dispensing Opticians and the Association of British Dispensing Opticians.
SPH: Will consist of a + or - power (unless 0.00) in 0.25 steps. For example -1.00, -1.25, -1.50
CYL: May consist of a + or - power in 0.25 steps. For example -0.25, -0.50, -0.75, (remember not everyone requires a CYL)
Axis: Will consist of a numerical value from 0 to 180, remember this is only required when you have a CYL value.
One thing to remember is that the optician is legally obliged to give you a copy of your current prescription as long as its valid (less than two years old, or less than one year old if you are over 70 years old.) and you have paid for it. Remember it's your personal data!
The one piece of information your optician might not want to give you is your PD (pupillary distance) measurement. This is the distance between your two pupils in millimetres. If you cannot get this information either get your friend to measure the distance with a ruler or our team can work this out based on the national average, your gender & age.
